Learning about mass through Bridge Building

In order for students to understand mass and get a real understanding of kilograms they were given the challenge to build a 30cm span bridge that could support a 1kg weight. They were only allowed to use popsticks, straws, paper, masking tape or sticky tape.

Through this fun activity all student learnt a wide range of maths skills relating to number, geometry, measurement data collection and everyone definitely developed a more in depth understanding of what a kilogram is and exactly how heavy it is. The most successful bridge was build held 4.5 kilos!
